Best Cycling Rollers Review
For cyclists in colder climates, staying active and fit during the winter months can be tough, but a good cycling roller can certainly help.
Maintaining balance on the rollers is tough at first, but as soon as you get the hang of it, you have access to a great training tool that will make it feel as though you have trained as hard as possible in the off-season. By the time spring comes around, there is a better than average chance that you will have a competitive edge on cyclists who took some time off. Listed below are what we believe to be the best cycling rollers on the market.
CycleOps Cycling Rollers
These rollers look to be rather basic, but looks can be deceiving. The rollers get moving very quickly, and offer an incredibly smooth ride at faster speeds. This unit is ready to go right out of the box, and the fact that they stand up when folded closed means that storage is a snap. There are no safety features in place to prevent you from coming off, but the alloy rollers do a better job of keeping you in place as compared to the PVC rollers out there. These Cycleops cycling rollers have a decent level of resistance delivered via the mid-sized drums to ensure that you get a great workout, but are also easily able to slow down when your ride is over.
Minoura MOZ Rollers
Minoura’s older rollers had storage issues, as well as being difficult to get on, but the new Minoura MOZ rollers have taken care of those problems. These rollers are probably best for beginners or spinners, and one of their biggest selling points is the 3-fold frame that makes for easy storage. The Minoura MOZ rollers feature a slim mounting step and an 8-point floor support that will help keep you upright at all times. The rollers themselves are excellent, as they are smooth and won’t leave any sort of metal sheen on your tires. This is good news for cyclists who like to put in long sessions on their bike rollers.
Kreitler Challenger Rollers
If you are looking for an upgradeable set of premium rollers, look no further than the Kreitler range of products. The Kreitler Challenger Rollers are an excellent jumping off point, as the “icy” feel of these metal rollers prepares you nicely for what is to come. There are few bike rollers out there that can match the feel of riding on these large rollers, although their height can be tricky to navigate when you first get started. The use of different roller sizes makes it possible to get all kinds of workouts in, and there are some other serious add-ons, such as a headwind fan, that help give the Kreitler Challenger Rollers its name. It can be pricy to get the unit and all the upgrades, but we believe it to be a fine investment.
Tacx Antares Cycling Rollers
These rollers are easy to put together out of the box, and they also feature a telescopic design that makes for easy storage. Since the roller height is high and there is no step in place, getting on can be a little tricky, but the rollers themselves are a lot less slippy than their metal counterparts. The Tacx Antares cycling rollers get up to speed in a heartbeat, and you will be glad of the bobbin profile that helps keep the bike centered. If there is a bit of a downside to these rollers it is that coming off the end is a real possibility when you are performing hardcore sprints. Keep a relaxed, steady pace on the Tacx Antares Cycling Rollers, though, and you will be good to go for hours on end.
Elite Arion Mag Parabolic Rollers
This is a pricier set of rollers, but you get what you pay for with some excellent safety features, variable resistance, and a futuristic design all part of the package. No construction required out of the box, and resin frame is easy to store. The surface plastic drums are sturdy, and you will be kept in place by strategically placed flanged parabolic ends. These ends will not keep you from coming off when going at high speeds, but they do serve as a nice warning. Another great feature of the Elite Arion Mag Parabolic Rollers is the 3-position resistance engine that allows you to mix things up when you work out.
